The Current Fight
When families are denied benefits for the loss of their loved ones EMIR is there to help with the fight.
VICTIMIZED BY THE SYSTEM
Victims Compensation may deny the family
reimbursement for funeral expenses, loss of support , medical expenses and loss of wages. When families are denied same statement is given to all clients—“ the victim was a part of their own demise.
THE STRUGGLE
Usually the Victims Compensation claims are denied a second time. Upon the second rejection, the claimant can ask for a hearing with the state. Only a few families are willing to go through this process because of the humiliation that their deceased loved ones are being labeled as felons, families do not want to fight “the system” and they are retraumatized and can not relive the tragedy.
STEPPING FORWARD
Some brave families take up the fight. They want their loved ones name vindicated. They know that their loved ones are not “victims of their own demise.” Each family states the same thing “it’s not the money, it’s about my loved one being called a criminal.”
EMIR STEPS IN
EMIR helps these brave families with strength and support to fight the system. The fight is long and arduous. EMIR has helped families find legal aid to represent them with their cases in Harrisburg. With perseverance and determination, the families cases were overturned.
Every Murder is Real
Survivors of a violent death have to contend with a totally different set of circumstances than someone who has experienced a “natural” death. EMIR is here to guide survivors through the many feelings they will experiences and the legal ramifications that are inevitable. EMIR offers concrete, practical, and compassionate steps towards healing.
Community Outreach
From peace marches, to using drums to heal wounds, to organizing events where the community can gather and connect, EMIR is there to support the community.
